Sigillaria, Hartselle Formation, Mississippian Period Colbert County, Alabama Large fragments of fossil trees are common in the coal regions of Alabama. This specimen and the fossil stump opposite belong to a large and diverse group of coal age plants - the scale trees. This group of plants was a major component of coal.
