Pottsville Formation, Pennsylvanian Period Monte Sano Mountain, Madison County, Alabama Angular divisions on the surface of rocks, while unusual, may be locally common. Some look like mud cracks, eggs, or turtle shells. However, most geologic opinion suggests that they are deposited by ground water, possibly along small fractures in the rocks.
